PSY-1140   Substance Abuse: The Family & Society   3 Credits
Examines the effects of substance abuse on the abuser, the family, and society. Includes legal, ethical, emotional, and physical impact of substance abuse on society. Prerequisite: Introduction to Substance Abuse.

    1. Describe common abuser behavior patterns.
    2. Review the cultural patterns that engender substance abuse.
    3. Discuss the relationship between stress and substance abuse.
    4. Describe the effects of substance abuse on family systems, (i.e. parent responsibilities, marriage, emotional health of children, treatment of children within the family, the financial status of the family, adult children)
    5. Trace and discuss the dynamics of personal interaction within the chemically dependent family system (i.e. co-dependency enabling, covert and overt communication).
    6. Describe the effects of substance abuse on society, (i.e. schools, work, social agencies, the criminal justice system).
    7. Identify and develop goals and models of effective substance abuse education as a prevention tool.
    8. Assess the emotional, financial, and legal costs of substance abuse on the local community and state.

Master's degree required.
