Most compelling reasons this person would want to work at PPG Industrial Coatings:
  1. This role is prime for someone who desires and performs well in a production role.
  2. PPG is the global leader in coatings industry, and has a track record of success.
  3. PPG is focused on building our talent in their current role, and into future roles.

The purpose of the Production Lead role is to act as an extension of the shift Supervisor for day-to-day operations by supporting operators and holding them accountable for the process they are operating. They will act as a focal point for communication both within their group and between departments.  This role will require you to work four 12 hours days, 6am-6:30pm, Monday evening through Friday morning.

Production Leads do not have the authority to discipline employees, but are responsible for the performance of their group.  Consequently, they do have authority to direct their team from a leadership perspective, and are expected to report poor job performance of any team member to their Supervisor.

This role may serve as a backup operator to meet production demands, which occasionally requires the Production Lead to perform all job functions in the department.

Production Leads may be assigned to any of the production work areas: pre-assembly, mixing, milling, or extruding.

Primary Responsibilities:

As a production lead, you are expected to:
  • Report to Supervisor at least 10 minutes prior to your shift start time.
  • Determine priorities and assign work accordingly to meet production demands/ schedule.
  • Meet with outgoing/incoming production lead counterpart at the beginning and end of each shift to discuss ongoing machinery or quality issues and to conduct a walk-through of your work area(s).
  • May be required to conduct safety audit as needed.
  • Schedule break times within work area when necessary.
  • Make decisions on how best to proceed when problems arise, and report these problems immediately to your Supervisor for further action.
  • Ensure compliance with procedures and provide feedback and/or suggestions for improvements.
  • Participate in the evaluation of suggested process improvement ideas and procedural changes. Solicit feedback from operators in the group.
  • Ensure operators are entering data into logs, documenting equipment downtime and quality samples.
  • Coordinate training activities for all operators in the group. Perform training as necessary.
  • Ensure all equipment problems are reported and maintenance work orders are submitted.
  • Maintain exceptional housekeeping in your area of responsibility; consistently utilize 5S principles to ensure areas are clean, tools are in their proper places, and materials are at expected levels.
  • Monitor and enforce all safety and health requirements; participate in incident investigations including root cause analysis.
  • Assist your Supervisor in the operator evaluation process including the determination of whether an employee has met all requirements for completion of their task training; designate time with trainees prior to task testing to ensure demonstrated proficiency.
  • Coordinate break times to ensure the process is kept running smoothly.

Additional Mixing/Preassembly Responsibilities:
  • Ensure cleanliness of area.
  • Ensure mixes are staged and ready to be processed for upcoming batches to maximize productivity.
  • Manage materials needing to be weighed on a shift by shift basis

  • Validation of operator’s equipment requests before calling maintenance
  • Inspect filters on all mills on a weekly basis.

Benefits To Your Team

  • Improves the “Management of Change” process by creating a consistent feedback system.
  • Provides a focal point for concentrated process training which can then be passed on to others.
